La gala de los Oscars fue opacada por la inesperada y violenta reacción del nominado Will Smith ante una broma pesada sobre su esposa que fue hecha por el comediante Chris Rock
Aunque «CODA» ganó los premios a la mejor película, guión y actor de reparto, fue «Dune» y Will Smith quienes se robaron el espectáculo en la edición 94 de los Premios de la Academia.
Completo con los protocolos COVID para la experiencia en persona, los premios se llevaron a cabo, aunque con nuevas reglas controvertidas sobre el anuncio previo al espectáculo de ocho categorías, en el Dolby Theatre de Hollywood este año.
En general, los nominados fueron liderados este año por Netflix «The Power of the Dog» con 12 nominaciones. Sus mejores competidores cinematográficos son «King Richard», «CODA,» «Drive My Car,» «Nightmare Alley,» «West Side Story,» «Belfast,» «Don’t Look Up,» «Licorice Pizza» y «Dune.»

Todo lo que pase después de este momento en la ceremonia número 94 de los Premios de la Academia quedará definitivamente opacado por la inesperada y violenta reacción del nominado Will Smith ante una broma pesada sobre su esposa que fue hecha por el comediante Chris Rock en el escenario del Teatro Dolby.
Luego de que su intervención, marcada por la irreverencia que lo caracteriza, lo llevara a referirse de manera supuestamente inapropiada a la cabeza afeitada de Jada Pinkett Smith, Rock fue golpeado en el mismo estrado por Smith, quien se paró de su asiento para subir las escaleras y propinarle lo que aparentemente fue una bofetada.

Tras regresar al lugar que se le había asignado al lado de su mujer, el protagonista de «King Richard» le gritó varias veces a Rock que dejara de hablar de ella empleando palabras completamente altisonantes que se escucharon de manera clara en la transmisión del evento que recibimos en la sala de prensa, generando desconcierto y sorpresa.
La primera tendencia de los que cubrimos la ceremonia desde el recinto de Hollywood fue pensar que se trataba de una broma compartida por el mismo Smith, pero en vista de la dureza de lo mostrado y de lo dicho (aunque el golpe solo se vio de lejos, por lo que pareció a primera vista trucado), la posibilidad de que sea así luce remota. Esto marcará sin duda alguna un antes y un después en la historia de Hollywood.
